The altarpiece "Korsportalen" in Madlamark Church is an impressive work of art executed in porcelain tiles. Standing 22 metres tall and 10 metres wide, the artwork covers the entire wall behind the altar.
The composition is built around the Greek cross and the Y-cross, which symbolise the Trinity and the resurrection of Christ. The tiles feature calligraphic text drawn from biblical passages, selected by the congregation, giving the artwork a strong connection to the church community.
The artwork symbolises the journey of the Word through history, from language to language, and the portal form can also be interpreted as a passage from one thing to another. The tablet at the base of the altar, with gold-printed texts, adds an additional layer of meaning to the already symbolically rich work.
