Bluebird - nostalgic and cozy

Bluebird - nostalgisk og koselig

Some dinnerware sets immediately resonate. They evoke a mood, trigger a memory, and make the table a warmer place. Bluebird from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik is one of them. With its lovely bluebird pattern and subtly nostalgic feel, the series has become one of our most beloved dinnerware sets since its launch in 2012 – a new classic in our over 135-year tradition of blue and white porcelain decor.

What is Bluebird?

Bluebird is a charming and nostalgic tableware designed by Maud Bugge (Maud Gjeruldsen Bugge). The tableware has strong roots in Porsgrund's history, where blue and white have always been central colours. The Bluebird series from Porsgrund combines the best of tradition and modern design, with its elegant bluebird pattern that adds a fresh and light atmosphere to the table. The series invites you to mix and match – different pieces feature different motifs of birds, flowers, and butterflies, all in the characteristic blue colour against white porcelain. This makes it easy to set a table with life and variation, whether you prefer a uniform look or a playful combination of motifs.

Designed by Maud Bugge

Bluebird was launched in 2012 and designed by chief designer Maud Bugge at Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik. Bugge is one of the central design voices in Norwegian homeware design, and in addition to Bluebird, she has created several of Porsgrund's most beloved series – including the delicate Christmas tableware Dompap and the bone china series Tid. With Bluebird, she drew inspiration from Porsgrund's proud traditions, where the classic blue and white colour scheme has held a special place since the factory began production in 1887.

The result is tableware that is clearly rooted in Porsgrund's identity, but with its own lighter and more illustrative design language than the more graphic straw pattern tableware. Where the straw pattern is formed by the brushstrokes of the porcelain painters, Bluebird is built on motifs from nature – the bird, the flower, the butterfly – rendered with a fresh and playful blue line.

Bluebird and the blue and white tradition

Bluebird is not just a beautiful dinnerware set – it also expresses something deeper in Porsgrund’s identity. White porcelain with blue decoration has been at the core of the factory's visual expression since 1887, when the Bogstad Straw Pattern was produced for the first time. The hand-painted blue and white straw pattern is referred to by experts as the "eternal pattern," and harks back to the very first European porcelain factories and their inspiration from Chinese porcelain art. Bluebird continues this tradition in a new form. The bird motifs are taken from nature, not from the stylized floral decoration of the straw tradition, but the palette is the same – blue on white – and the connection to Porsgrund's long history is clearly present.
