When summer finally arrives, we often move our meals outdoors and gather around a table that invites long conversations, good food, and warm summer evenings. In the June issue of Shop the Look, we visited Caroline Kirkhus, the woman behind the Instagram account Frua i vest, who has set a beautiful summer table inspired by sea life, nature, and the blue tones of the classic Ministrå dinnerware.

Creativity, cabin projects, and a love for the small details

– Hi! I'm Caroline, a 37-year-old mother of three and the woman behind the Instagram account Frua i vest. I created the account when we bought our seaside cabin in 2021. Since then, we've renovated it and truly made the place our own. We always have new plans and projects for the cabin, and that's probably what defines me. I love being creative and particularly enjoy it when the final details of a project fall into place.

The same attention to detail is clearly reflected when Caroline sets a table.

A summer table inspired by nature

For Caroline, all table setting begins with a clear idea and a consistent theme.

“When I set a table, I always want to create a consistent theme in terms of colors and expression. I often draw inspiration from nature – in colors, shapes, and textures.”

The choice naturally fell on the beautiful Ministrå dinnerware from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik. The characteristic blue decorative pattern forms the basis for the entire table setting.

“The lovely motif on the Ministrå dinnerware features shades from mid-blue to deep blue, and these colors are echoed in both the table runner and the decorations.”

The result is a summer table that feels light, elegant, and timeless.

Maritime atmosphere by the sea

With her cabin close to the sea, Caroline wanted to bring in elements from the surroundings.

– I also wanted to bring out the summery and maritime feel that surrounds our cabin. That's why I picked up mussels to highlight the blue tones in the tableware and complemented them with lighthouses as decoration. On the table, we find the atmospheric lighthouses from Porsgrund with LED lights that create a cozy atmosphere as evening approaches.

– It becomes extra atmospheric when the LED lights in the lighthouses are lit as the evening sun sets. Together with the maritime details, the lighthouses give the table a personal and summery character that is perfect for long evenings by the sea.

Table setting with textures and flowers

A successful summer table isn't just about tableware and decor. Caroline places great emphasis on combining different materials and textures to create life and depth.

The classic cutlery pieces with porcelain handles add a nostalgic and elegant touch, while the popular 25 cl Norgesglass jars are used as both drinking glasses and decorative elements.

– I like to combine different textures and materials to create life in the table setting, and the cute bottles from Norgesglasset were therefore perfect as vases.

Light cut flowers in various shapes and heights help soften the look and create natural harmony around the table.

– We've had a cold May, and the wild flowers are still awaited, but it's important to look around. Often you can find beautiful summer flowers for lovely bouquets in the garden, at the edge of the forest, or along the hiking trail.

Summer menu

For Caroline, the best summer meals are simple, seasonal, and often inspired by the ocean.

– June hopefully brings good summer temperatures, and a cold, creamy asparagus soup is the perfect start to a long girls' night filled with conversation and good company.

The soup is often served in pieces from the popular ovenware series, which is just as suitable for serving as for preparation.

Furthermore, seafood naturally features on the menu.

– We live so close to the sea that the main course naturally has to be grilled, self-caught fish served with oven-baked vegetables from the greenhouse.

For dessert, Caroline chooses a light summer cake topped with fresh seasonal berries.

– For dessert, an easy and light summer cake with fresh berries is, of course, perfect – enjoyed to the sound of seagulls and lapping waves. Summer's own music.
