Rat-Maiden - Skien

Rotte-Jomfruen - Skien

Design: Bente Nordheim

The Rat Maiden is a 7-meter-tall sculpture located at Bakkestranda in Skien, a popular recreational area.

The sculpture, inspired by Henrik Ibsen's play "Little Eyolf," is adorned with a unique pattern of porcelain tiles representing the eyes of the rats in the play. These tiles, painted by over 2,000 schoolchildren, were produced at Porsgrund Porselensfabrik and are integrated into the sculpture's structure in an artistic and symbolic way.

Each tile functions as an individual artwork and contributes to the overall expression. The eyes on the sculpture symbolize both the physical rats and the more abstract questions of what gnaws between people – a central theme in Ibsen's work. In addition to its artistic dimension, the sculpture also serves as playground equipment, featuring a popular slide that children love to play on.

The Leaf Vase, designed by Konrad Galaaen, is an icon in Norwegian design history. He is also behind the popular Spire dinnerware set. This 29 cm cream-colored edition is a smaller version of the original 58 cm vase, and has the same characteristic shape with a narrow neck and softly curved body.

The elegant leaf relief gives the vase a unique texture and makes it a decorative ornament in the home. The light cream color provides a timeless and sophisticated expression that fits perfectly into both classic and modern interiors.

The Cream Leaf Vase is ideal for seasonal flowers, twigs and branches, but is just as beautiful on its own as a stylish decoration. A true statement piece from Porsgrund Porselænsfabrik, created to last for generations.
