It is fired at very high temperatures, which causes the glaze to melt with the body, forming a hard, smooth, and non-porous surface. Porcelain withstands daily use well and stays beautiful over time, making it suitable for both everyday and more formal occasions.

6. What is the difference between feldspar porcelain and bone china?

Feldspar porcelain and bone china are two different types of porcelain with distinct characteristics, appearances, and uses.

Feldspar porcelain is often referred to as "classic" porcelain and is the type Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik primarily produces. It is made from kaolin, feldspar, and quartz, and fired at very high temperatures. This results in a strong, dense, and durable material where the glaze melts into the body. The outcome is porcelain with high hardness, good luster, and excellent functional properties. It withstands daily use well, stays beautiful over time, and is equally suitable for everyday use and special occasions.

Bone china, also known as Bone China, also contains bone ash, which gives the material a warmer white color and a more transparent appearance. At the same time, it is somewhat more sensitive to impacts and chipping, and is therefore used more often for finer occasions than for daily use.

9. Is the dinnerware dishwasher safe?

Yes, most dinnerware from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik is dishwasher safe and designed for easy and practical everyday use.

However, if the dinnerware has gold or platinum decoration, we recommend hand washing. This helps to preserve the decoration and ensure it stays beautiful longer over time.

10. Can the dinnerware be used in the microwave?

Yes, most dinnerware from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik can be safely used in the microwave. The porcelain is designed for daily use and can withstand heating food in a simple and practical way.

The exception is dinnerware with gold or platinum decoration. These should not be used in the microwave, as the metal in the decoration can damage both the dinnerware and the microwave.

11. How do I best care for my porcelain?

Porcelain from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik is made to last, and with proper care, it will remain beautiful for many years.

If the porcelain loses some of its shine over time, this can often be due to grease, limescale, or natural use. This can easily be refreshed with a mild cleaning agent and a soft sponge.

Coffee marks and tea stains can be removed by using, for example, Jif or another mild cleaning agent with a soft sponge. Always avoid using steel wool or other abrasive tools, as this can damage the surface.

For more stubborn stains, mild acids like citric acid or vinegar can be effective. Chlorine can also be used if needed, but always with caution and according to the recommendations for the product you are using.

With gentle cleaning and proper maintenance, your porcelain will retain both its shine and quality over time.

12. What can cause scratches on porcelain?

What often appears as scratches on porcelain is usually not actual scratches in the glaze, but so-called cutlery marks. Gray streaks most often occur because the metal in the cutlery is softer than the glaze, and leaves small metal particles on the surface when it rubs against the porcelain – not because the plate is scratched.

13. How do I remove gray cutlery marks from plates?

Porcelain is a very hard material, and the glaze itself rarely gets damaged with normal use. These marks can usually be removed with mild cleaning agents (Jif, Mr. Muscle, etc.) and a soft sponge.

Dinnerware from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik is developed in collaboration with various designers throughout history, and we have a strong tradition of Norwegian design and craftsmanship.

Today, Cathrine Kirkerud is the head designer at Porsgrund, and she is part of our PP Design Team, which consists of both designers and buyers who together develop new dinnerware and collections.

Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik has throughout history created several iconic dinnerware sets that have become part of Norwegian cultural heritage and table setting tradition in many homes.

Bogstad Stråmønster is a classic dinnerware set with roots dating back to the late 19th century. It is inspired by European porcelain history and has an elegant, timeless expression that has made it an enduring favorite through generations. The set's straw pattern is still hand-painted today at our factory in Porsgrunn by our skilled straw painters, who use the same technique as in the 19th century.

Bondemønster is one of Porsgrund's most famous decorative series, with clear inspiration from Norwegian folk art. The characteristic blue pattern has made the dinnerware a true classic, and it remains as popular today as it has been for many decades.

Nisseserviset (Gnome Dinnerware) is one of our most traditional Christmas classics. With its nostalgic and atmospheric expression, it has become a fixed part of Christmas celebrations in many Norwegian homes, bringing true Christmas spirit year after year.

Yes, several of Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik's dinnerware sets have a very long history and have been produced and loved for generations.

Bogstad Stråmønster had its first firing in 1887 and is one of our most traditional dinnerware sets.

Nisseserviset (Gnome Dinnerware) was introduced in 1898 and has since become a firm Christmas classic in many Norwegian homes.

Bondemønster came in 1932 and is still one of our most iconic and popular decorative dinnerware sets.

These dinnerware sets are good examples of timeless design and Norwegian porcelain history that still live on today.

21. Where is Porsgrund dinnerware produced?

Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik still has an active factory in Porsgrunn, where we produce dinnerware and special products.

At the same time, parts of the production take place in collaboration with established and professional partners in both Asia and Europe. We have worked closely with these partners for many years to ensure high quality, stable production, and an excellent end result.

No matter where the production takes place, quality, design, and function are always at the core of everything we create.

26. Can I still get parts for old dinnerware sets?

Yes, it is often possible to find parts for older dinnerware sets, even if they are no longer in regular production. Many of our classic series continue to circulate through various channels.

You might be lucky enough to find parts through auction houses, second-hand markets, and various Facebook groups and marketplaces where collectors and private individuals sell and exchange porcelain. These are often good places to look for individual pieces to complete an existing dinnerware set.

27. What do I do if a part of my dinnerware breaks?

If a part of your dinnerware breaks, it usually cannot be repaired, but you can often replace the part by purchasing individual products if the series is still in production. Many of our dinnerware sets are sold as open series, so you can supplement as needed over time.

How long a dinnerware set is produced can vary, depending on demand, season, and developments in the assortment. Some dinnerware sets are timeless classics that have been in production for many decades, while others are more seasonal or produced for a limited period.

At Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, we continuously work on further developing collections, and popular dinnerware sets may remain in the assortment for a long time through replenishments and extensions of pieces. At the same time, new designs are regularly introduced that replace or supplement existing series.

This means that the lifespan of a dinnerware set can range from a few years to several generations.

30. How do I know if a dinnerware set is in stock?

You can easily see the stock status on the product page in the online store. If an item is sold out, you have the option to use the “Notify me” function. You will then receive an email notification as soon as the product is back in stock.

Please note that some of our dinnerware sets are seasonal and are only produced once a year. This includes series such as Nisseserviset, Citron, Jordbæreng, Maritim, Bondemønster, Fauna, and Dompap. For these, availability may therefore be limited, and we recommend securing desired products when they are in stock.

31. How quickly do you deliver from porsgrund.com?

We ship all packages from our warehouse with PostNord, Instabox, or Porterbuddy.

Delivery time is usually 1–3 business days, depending on the chosen carrier and where in the country you live. During periods of high demand, such as campaigns and holidays, slightly longer delivery times may occur.

You will receive updates along the way so you can easily track your package right up to delivery.

32. Can I send a gift directly to the recipient?

36. How many plates do I need for a table setting?

As a starting point, you will need:

1 dinner plate – for the main course
1 deep plate (or bowl) – if serving soup, pasta, or similar
1 side plate – for a starter, dessert, or bread

37. How do I set a classic dinner table?

A classic table setting is based on a tidy and functional arrangement, where everything is placed so that it is easy to use – while also creating an elegant and refined impression.

Start by placing a dinner plate in the center in front of each chair. If serving multiple courses, you can place a side plate or starter plate on top, or bring it out later. Cutlery is laid in the order it will be used, from the outside in towards the plate: forks on the left side and knives on the right, with the knife blade facing inwards. A spoon is placed to the right of the knife if soup is being served.

Glasses are placed at the top right of the plate, preferably with the water glass closest and any wine glasses next to it. The napkin can be placed on the plate or to the left of the forks.

If you want a more formal look, you can add more glasses, serving pieces, and possibly a tablecloth as a base. At the same time, a classic table setting doesn't have to be stiff or complicated – the most important thing is that it feels inviting and works well for the meal you are serving.

With simple principles and your personal touches, you can create a table setting that is both practical, timeless, and pleasant to gather around.
